Maternity Care

If you are planning a pregnancy, please book a routine appointment to see a nurse for health advice, preferably three months before you start trying for a baby.

In particular, we suggest a check for immunity for German measles (rubella) and ensure that all women are taking folic acid.

If you know you are pregnant (a home test is very accurate) we suggest you come and see a doctor 6 to 8 weeks after the first day of your last period (please book a double appointment). We usually provide shared care with your hospital.

Following the birth of your baby, we offer a post-natal check for both mother and child at 8 weeks.

8 Week Checks

All newborn babies are seen when they are 8 weeks old for a full developmental check by one of our GPs. A practice nurse will also check your baby’s growth and administer their first immunisations at this time. For your convenience, we combine your baby’s check with your own post-natal check up.

Our Health Visitors carry out 1 year review checks by appointment on Thursday afternoons at the surgery.

Both the 8 week checks and the 1 year review checks are scheduled by one of our Administrator, who will contact parents directly as newborns approach these thresholds.
